'ar' words

While introducing our spelling words for the week we created a list of all words that had the 'ar' sound. One precious little angel raises her hand and says, "Bar has the 'ar' sound..you know it's the place where grown men go to drink beer and coffee!"
Never a dull moment even when your only talking about spelling. (=

"If you give a first grader pizza they are going to want beer"

After reading If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff we studied cause and effect stories. I then had each student create their own version "If you give a first grader pizza" story. This is by far the best one!

Columbus Day

 Columbus Day was last week.
In social studies we studied Columbus and I had the children recite the poem (In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue) to me individually as we created his ship. One boy recites this to me and then says: "Columbus is still alive right?" After explaining to him that he has passed away and that 1492 was a long time ago he then says: "Well that doesn't make sense because my great grandpa is still alive!"

Johnny Appleseed Day

Johnny Appleseed Day in September!

I'm just now learning how to post pictures on my blog posts so I thought I would share some every once in awhile to show what we have been doing.

Noun Town with Pubs

This past week we learned about nouns. On Thursday we went on a noun scavenger hunt. Then we worked on a class project to create a "noun town". Each table group was assigned either a person, place, or thing category. As I was helping the "places" table decide what they wanted to add to the town one little girl looks at me and says "we need to have a pub in our town for sure!" I guess we know where her parents go on the weekend. At least she knew it was a noun (=

One of our vocabulary words this week is focus. When I asked someone to use it in a sentence  this student says, "Auburn needs to focus because they didn't in the game." They also had to illustrate one vocabulary word and he picked focus...above it his picture of an Auburn football player that needs to "focus". He has a a good point. Hopefully the Tigers will be able to focus this weekend and win! (=

BoOgErs

Working with six year olds you learn to expect them to have their fingers in their nose at some point which absolutely grosses me out! Whenever I see one of my students with their fingers in their nose I call them out in front of their peers by saying" so and so that is NASTY, go get hand sanitizer". It embarrasses them but hopefully it will teach them to think twice next time they have the urge to go digging for gold...but probably not. As I was walking my kids to art this week I saw one of my favorite students from two years ago walking down the hall with his fingers almost all the way up his nose. I said, " stop doing that, it's NASTY" he replies to me saying, "but miss kenimer, it's okay because I have a whole collection of these guys next to my bed at home." Even as third graders they are still amazed by boogers for some reason.....so gross!

Star Student

Every week I pick a child to be the star student of the week. The weekend before their special week they work on an "all about me" poster at home. On Monday they bring it in and share it with the class. On the poster it has a place for "things I do not like". My student of the week this week glued a picture of Bill Haslam (the current Governor of TN)to her things I do not like section. When telling the class about it she raises her voice to tell everyone how much she doesn't like that man...I guess we know who her parents don't like too. (=
The next day she comes to school and tells me that "Bill Haslam is blowing up mountains and that is never going to be good for us". I respond by saying "Oh gosh, I hope not that's not good..." She told me "don't worry miss kenimer, we aren't really going to hurt Haslam but he is NOT good news"
Oh the things kids pick up from their parent's conversations about politics...

A day in the life...

The work of a teacher never seems to end some days. There's always something to work on at school or at home. A teacher's work day is not 8-3 instead it's more like 6:40 to 4 most days with work still taken home. Though at times it seems like a lot of work, I LOVE every minute of it! First grade is where I am meant to be, this age group has my heart. I can not imagine teaching any other grade. Some people say I'm crazy for wanting to work with the little ones, but I think the people that want to work with middle and high school students are beyond insane! (=
My little people are always saying funny things and my dad has always said I need to write it down. This blog is my attempt of recording the absurd things that come out of their mouths.
The best part about teaching six year olds is that you never know what they will do/say next.
